In an unnatural phenomena, the polar bears are under threat from the Sharks. Already threatened by the thaw of ice around the north pole, the polar bear’s title as the top Arctic predator may under challenge from Shark. Scientists researching for as how far Sharks hunt seals in the Arctic were astonished to find part of the jaw of a young polar bear in the stomach of a Greenland Shark, a species that favours polar waters.
Scientists never heard of this before as they are in a fix as to how it go there. The Norwegian Polar Institute, which is researching on Arctic revealed that a four inch bone was found in a Shark off the Norwegian Arctic archipelago of Svalbard. Scientists of the Institute are not sure whether or not the Shark took a swimming young bear or ate a carcass. No body also knows how active these Sharks are as predators.
Some scientists are in opinion that it is likely the bear was dead before the Shark found it as even a young, two or three- year old bear would be ferocious opponent for a Greenland Shark, which can grow upto 23 feet and weigh more than a tonne even. Hence the Shark eating a live bear may not be possible. Some others are in opinion that it sounds like a scavenge as they have not heard till yet, a shark eating a polar bear. Hence now it seems a million dollar question for researches to find as to whether Greenland Sharks attack live polar bears.
In the past bits of animals have been found in Greenland Shark’s stomach, either scavenged or attacked swimming. In this context, there is very rare possibility that a Greenland Shark could predate a live polar bear unless it is injured or seriously ill. But by any chance, if it is true that the Shark attacked a swimming live bear & eaten it, is going to be really a grave situation as the polar bears are already listed as most threatened species. Hence more research is required on this to find the truth & if it is true, then adequate measures have to be taken to stop it on urgent basis.
