The developers of the custom operating system MenuetOS, developed since 2000, announced the release of a new version of their brainchild. The latest image of the system, written in assembly language, still weighs only 1.4 MB, but boasts not only a graphical interface, but also a decent set of functions.
MenuetOS 1.5 supports 64-bit x86 processors and is distributed as a floppy disk image (1.4 MB) or a CD burning ISO (49 MB, supports running in VirtualBox). Among the main features of the OS, developers note preemptive multitasking, the ability to boot on systems with UEFI, as well as a graphical interface with support for themes, Drag&Drop functions, UTF-8 encoding and switching keyboard layouts.
The OS supports work with the USB 2.0 interface (drives, printers, DVB tuners and web cameras), as well as with AC97 and Intel HDA (ALC662/888) for audio output. The list of compatible applications includes a file manager, browser, email client, software for viewing images, editing texts and working with files, as well as multimedia players (support for DVB-T, mpeg-2 video, mpeg-1 layer I, II, III audio, DVD, MP3 and video in MPEG-2 format).
In addition, in the operating system you can run a DOS emulator with games – for example, Quake and DOOM. You can download the latest version of the compact OS on the developer’s official website . It is worth noting that it is distributed under a restrictive license requiring approval for any commercial use.
