A man who worked at a hotel in Goa as a bartender was arrested on Thursday for attacking a woman tourist from the Netherlands. Police said the accused has been identified as Abhishek Verma (27) from Dehradun.
The incident took place on the intervening night between Tuesday and Wednesday at the Wigwam resort in Mandrem, Superintendent of Police (North Goa) Nidhin Valsan told reporters.
ATTACKED TWO PEOPLE WITH KNIFE
In her complaint, the Dutch tourist said an unknown man aged between 25 to 30 years trespassed into her rented tent on the hotel premises. She said the man tried to hold her down and threatened her when she started screaming.
Hearing the commotion, a local man came to her rescue and the attacker ran away. He then returned with a knife and attacked her and the local man before fleeing.
The attacker managed to injure both the woman and the local man.
A case was registered against the man under various sections of the Indian Penal Code related to trespassing, outraging modesty, attempt to murder, causing grievous hurt, among others. Pernem police arrested Abhishek Verma during their investigation.
The Netherlands Embassy has taken cognizance of the incident and Dutch officials have arrived in Goa.
The incident comes on the heels of a Japanese woman being harassed by a group of men in Delhi during Holi celebrations, raising a question on the safety of women tourists in India.
