The effect of frequent border skirmishes between India and China is visible from the parliament to the government. But does this also concern the Chinese companies working in India. These days, in Auto Expo 2023, a Chinese electric vehicle company dominated with its high end technology product. His opinion is slightly different about this, not only this, the company has also made a tremendous strategy to increase its business in India.

China’s electric vehicle company BYD dominated the Auto Expo 2023. The company has unveiled its electric sedan BYD Seal here, which will be launched in the festive season this year. At the same time, it is being claimed till the customers get a range of 700 km. TV9 Digital had an exclusive conversation with Sanjay Gopalakrishnan, Senior Vice President of the company.

BYD has any plans to bring a small electric vehicle?

Sanjay Gopalakrishnan said that BYD currently wants to focus on the premium segment of electric vehicles in India. In 2023, we will go ahead with Atto 3, E6 and SEAL models only. We plan to bring electric cars (small and affordable EVs) in the mass segment once the company becomes stable in the next 2 to 3 years.

Will BYD make its cars in India only?

He said that BYD is currently assembling in India. The company is focused on Make in India and PLI scheme. When the right time comes, the company will focus on starting manufacturing in India. The company’s focus is on achieving about 40 percent share in India’s electric vehicle market.

Will the company be affected by the fluctuating relations between India and China?

Sanjay Gopalakrishnan said in response to this question that we do not tell our customers that we are a Chinese auto company. Rather we tell them that we are Global Technology Company. We only make electric vehicles and in this case we are the largest company in the world. In 2021, we sold 6.5 lakh EVs worldwide, in 2022 its number increased to 18 lakh. Ultimately our customers are happy with our products, while we are the bread-winner, so that’s what matters to us.

Many Chinese apps have been closed in India before, what will BYD do in such a situation?

Sanjay Gopalakrishnan said that in reality we have not yet considered such a political problem. Chinese apps were closed, but still Chinese mobile manufacturing companies are working in the country. The market share of companies like Oppo, Vivo is also more than 60 percent. Indian customers see the product and its value. If they believe in our products, they will buy them.
