World is protesting unjust and unwarranted detention of Aung San Suu Kyi by the Burmese military junta in complete violation of human rights and democratic freedoms.
World has not forgotten Suu Kyi, despite being under house arrest for more than 13 years. She continues to be ambassador of democracy.
Today, thousands organized demonstration in front of Burmese embassies across the world in protest at her continued detention by the Burmese military. She turns 64 today.
After years of being under house arrests, Aung San Suu Kyi is on trial for allegedly violating the terms of her house arrest after a man uninvited swam a lake to her home. She is now being held in Insein Prison, a prison notorious for its terrible conditions and horrific treatment of prisoners. If convicted, she faces a prison sentence upto five years.
Over the past few days, politicians and celebrities across the world have demanded her release, which obviously did not deter the Junta from keeping her under continued detention. Countries like India need to take proactive part in ensuring that human rights are not blatantly violated in Burma by the Junta. India so far has been a mute spectator to the happening in the country because it has a bigger interests in gas and other natural resources in Burma. If India has to take lead in the affairs of the world, it is necessary that she keep her neighbors in order. Keeping its neighbors in order does not include ignoring broad day light murder of democracy.
