Mumbai’s Regional Metrological Department has issued a rainfall alert in the wake of intensifying “extremely severe cyclonic storm” Cyclone Biparjoy. The weather department has said that thunderstorm accompanied with lightning is likely to occur over Maharashtra’s capital city in the next 3-4 hours.
The weather department mentioned that Ratnagiri, Raigad, Thane, Palghar will receive moderate spell of rainfall in the next few hours. The IMD has noted that gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph will prevail in these areas for the 3-4 hours.
The extremely severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy moved north-northeastwards with a speed of eight kilometres per hour during the past six hours, the India Meteorological Department said on Sunday.
“It is very likely to move nearly northwards till Wednesday morning, then move north-northeastwards and cross Saurashtra and Kutch and adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi (Gujarat) and Karachi (Pakistan) around noon of 15th June as a very severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 125-135 kmph gusting to 150 kmph,” the Met Department said.
Cyclone Biparjoy: IMD Latest update
-Cyclone Biparjoy is likely to make landfall between Kutch district of Gujarat and Karachi in Pakistan on June 15,
-The IMD has issued an alert in Thane, Mumbai and Palghar. It has also asked fishermen in the coastal areas to be on alert from 11-14 June
-High waves were observed at Tithal Beach in Gujarat’s Valsad, a coastal city on the Arabian Sea on Saturday. Tithal Beach has been closed to tourists until June 14 as a precautionary measure.
-The IMD has issued a Yellow Alert for Saurashtra and Kutch Coast. The weather department has noted that very severe cyclonic storm Cyclone Biparjoy will cross Saurashtra and Kutch and adj Pakistan coasts around noon of 15 June
-The Indian Coast Guard Region-North West has initiated outreach to advise the fishing community, mariners and stakeholders of Gujarat, Daman and Diu to take necessary precautions and safety measures,
-Gujarat will witness thunderstorm activity during the next five days with wind speed remaining high
-There has been considerable uncertainty in the track and intensity of cyclone Biparjoy since it developed on 6 June
-According to meteorologists, the storm underwent rapid intensification in the initial days and has sustained its strength due to a warmer Arabian Sea.
-Meanwhile, the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has issued a ‘red alert’ as the Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) Biparjoy over the east-central Arabian Sea continues to maintain its intensity
-Senior Scientist at the IMD, DS Pai, said the exact place where it will make landfall will become clearer in the coming days.
