Ever since Pathankot terror attack took place, the role of Border Security Forces (BSF) has been under scanner. BSF guards large section of Indo-Pakistan border stretching from Gujarat to Jammu & Kashmir. On eastern front they guard Indo-Bangladesh border. Questions have been raised over how Pakistan based terrorists sneaked into India from Punjab border and carried out terror attack in Pathankot. However this is not for the first time BSF has been under scanner. In the past they have been accused of helping smuggler in the western front.
Large scale drugs are smuggled inside India from Punjab border. It is widely alleged that smugglers are hand in glove with some border men guarding the sensitive Indo-Pak border. Last month Punjab and Rajasthan police arrested constables of BSF from their respective states for allegedly helping cross-border drugs and arms smugglers. In North East India especially in Assam, BSF has been allegedly accused of not being tough on illegal migrants who enter state from Bangladesh. But after coming under scanner over Pathankot incident and subsequent arrest of the some of their member, BSF seems to have learnt lesson. Today 191 battallion of BSF killed 4 smugglers in Khemkaran Sector on Indo Pak Border under Punjab. According to BSF sources two Indian Smugglers and two Pak smugglers were exchanging the packets of Heroin. After intercepted by BSF soldiers they started firing. All the four smugglers were killed during exchange of fire. The prompt action of BSF deserves appreciation. They should continue to act tough against the smugglers. Further besides strictly guarding the border, BSF should keep an eye on their own men and don’t let them become prey to anti-national elements.
