Teachers, be prepared to be rated by the students if Lucknow University has its way to turn the classroom tables on its teachers. They will get their annual grades from their students as per the University norms which is going to be implemented soon. The grading system has already got its name from the students ‘Gurujiki report card’.
Lucknow University, which is known for prolonged absence of teachers and incomplete syllabi before examinations will not be the first University to introduce it, it has already been implemented in University of Pune in last month & it went down fairly well with the teachers contrary to the assumptions. But that may not be the case in Lucknow University as the teachers of the University are planing to protest the move, citing an uneven teacher-student ratio. The Lucknow University Teacher’s Association has now asked for the authorities for more time to debate on the matter. But the University administration which was instructed by the UGC on this matter is not going back.
The students in turn are happy with the move, experiencing the apathetical attitude of teachers in teaching, learning & completing the syllabi. Eventhough the assessment process in very tricky but it could definitely make teachers feel responsible as vowed by the students community of Lucknow University. The University authorities also clarified that the apprehension of teachers that they may be unfairly treated was unfounded. They tell that it is very much structured & student would have no opportunity to be biased. Overall they are not allowed to write anything derogatory on the teachers & they are supposed to only grade them.
Eventhough it is a welcome step seeing the irresponsible attitude of majority teachers in the country, one has to be more careful in drafting the format as students usually get biased. There should be strict norms of assessments on their teaching skills, powerful pressure in the class-room, making learning process interesting etc. If now the teacher’s community shed the crocodile’s tear, why could not they become exemplary in past, why most of the teachers ruined the name & fame of the teaching -learning institution. As to why they destroyed the sanctity of teaching. Now perhaps the time has come to rate teachers by the students to make them responsible because teaching is one of the most pious profession in this world & teachers are regarded just next to god.
