Floods like any other natural disaster do not come announced. Arunachal have been caught off guard because of massive flash floods. Over the last few years, many pockets in the state have been devastated following floods.
Though the rains have been lesser, massive floods which was never witnessed before is almost perennial. In many districts agricultural plots have been abandoned because of sand formation caused by floods.
The worst affected are urban and semi urban areas. It is not difficult to suggest that these areas are worst affected because of lack of proper town planning. Once heavy downpour starts, the natural channels can not withstand the water force as its path are blocked and the few man made drainage system are so faulty that instead of making way for the flow of water, it blocks.
The state capital have witnessed massive damages last year because of floods which was made worse because of lacks of proper drainage system and blockages by buildings in the path of flow of water.
Though much have been discussed and written about rampant constructions of building at every available place, there is no system in place to check these buildings from coming up.
The floods in recent years came as wake up call. But no one seems to have leant anything substantial. All over the state, in the urban and semi urban areas, construction goes unabated and drainages system continues to be clogged.
Impact of any disaster is felt more by the common people. It is them who suffer the most.
Natural disaster cannot be stopped but impact can be lesser if there is some kind of system in place.
