To reduce the pollution caused by vehicles, to increase the fuel efficiency of vehicles, the Government of India has introduced ‘Vehicle Scrap Policy’. Under this policy, there is a preparation to send 15 year old vehicles to the junk in the country. Now the government has issued a notification for this, which will come into effect from April 1 this year.

In its notification, the government has made it clear that which vehicles are currently going to be scrapped. Vehicles sent for scrap will be recycled. From this, many items like metal, rubber, glass etc. will be obtained, which can be used again in making vehicles.

According to the notification, all 15 years old government vehicles in the country will be turned into junk from April 1. This also includes vehicles older than 15 years of the central and state government, buses of transport corporations and government companies.

According to the notification of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the registration of more than 15 years old vehicles of Central and State Governments and old buses of Transport Corporations and Public Sector Undertakings will be abolished from April 1. All these will be converted into junk.

These government vehicles will remain

In this notification, it has been made clear that the rule of sending vehicles to scrap will not apply to vehicles engaged in the work of defence, law and order, internal security and maintenance etc. These include armored and other special vehicles.

It has been said in the notification that from the date of registration of vehicles, 15 years will be completed by 1 April 2023. They will be sent to the junk under the Motor Vehicle (Registration and Vehicle Junk Facilitation Work) Rules-2021. Under this law, the work of sending registered vehicles to scrap will be done through registered vehicle scrap centers opened across the country.

What is the vehicle scrap policy?

In the budget of the financial year 2021-22, the government had announced the vehicle scrap policy. In this, the fitness test will have to be done after 20 years for private vehicles and after 15 years for commercial vehicles. The registration of the vehicles will be renewed only after they are cleared in the fitness test.

It has been said by the government that this policy is applicable in the country from April 1, 2022. Under this policy, if your vehicles have been sent for scrap in any state or union territory, and a new vehicle has been taken in its place, then people are being given road tax exemption of up to 25 percent on the new vehicle.
