Police said an argument broke out between two groups after a man, identified as Sumit, along with 10-15 other people, played music on a DJ while passing past a mosque, which was objected to by another group.
In the dispute, which reportedly lasted for about 10 minutes, both sides were allegedly involved in stone pelting, physical assault, and destruction of property. Amid the chaos, the DJ’s cart was damaged, too.
On being informed, the Assistant Commissioner of Police and other police officials from the Jankipuram Police Station reached the spot and nabbed the miscreants.
DCP Qasim Abidi said, “There wasn’t any permission for the procession. Both groups were detained and there was no disruption of peace in the area.”
Notably, the police took the CCTV footage in and around the mosque areas into their consideration and further actions will be taken based on the footage gathered.
Though the Hindu group claimed that they had taken permission to carry out the procession, the councillor of the area, Chand Siddiqui, said nobody ever took out a Shobha Yatra via that route and people tried to create unrest by taking out the procession.
Siddiqui spoke about a mutual agreement between the two sides in the matter, but the Hindu group has accused the supporters of the mosque of pelting stones without any reason.
The Jankipuram police station has towed the damaged DJ cart and deployed police officials. After the incident, a group of people from the Hindu community staged a protest outside the police station.
Incidents of violence marred Ram Navami celebrations in different states on Thursday. In Maharashtra’s Aurangabad, a mob allegedly attacked police personnel a day after two groups clashed in the area. Meanwhile, stones were hurled at a Ram Navami procession in Gujarat’s Vadodara city. In West Bengal’s Howrah district, stones were pelted at a Ram Navami procession and several vehicles were set aflame.
